Dealing With Disenfranchised Grief
Every person, regardless of circumstance, deals with grief at
some point in their life. We grieve after events such as a
break up or the death of a loved one; we grieve amidst
difficult transitions; we grieve over lost hopes or dreams.
Most people have heard of the seven stages of grief, but few
in our society recognize how difficult it is to go through the
process when one can’t share their grief openly.
We in the LGBT community are often burdened with disenfranchised
grief, meaning that our grief is unrecognized,
unacknowledged, and occasionally disdained by others in
society. If you are dealing with disenfranchised grief, you
need, above all else, support.
